Dosha Analysis

Almost nobody arrives asking what a dosha is. They arrive having been told they have one, usually by someone who did not explain it and often by someone with a remedy to sell.

In short: The chart is checked for whether the dosha is genuinely present, whether the classical cancellations apply, and — the part that matters most — what is actually causing the difficulty that brought you. There is usually a real answer, and it is frequently not the dosha.

The work

What this covers

Is it actually there

Free calculators check a house position and nothing else. They are not lying; they are answering a much smaller question than the one you think you asked. The first step is confirming the configuration on a correctly cast chart.

Does it cancel

The tradition is full of conditions under which a dosha does not apply — own sign, exaltation, aspect from Jupiter, matching placements, certain ascendants, and age. These get applied before the word is used.

What is really going on

If you came about a specific difficulty, the chart usually has a specific cause for it — a period running, an afflicted house, sometimes nothing astrological at all. Naming that is more useful than naming a dosha.

What a remedy would be for, if one applies

Aimed at the actual placement in question, with a stated purpose and a stated duration. A remedy aimed at the wrong thing is the plainest reason remedies fail.

What to bring

  • Date, exact time and place of birth
  • Which dosha you were told about, and what exactly you were told
  • What was quoted to you, if a remedy was offered
  • The difficulty that actually prompted you to look

What you get

  • A plain yes or no on whether the configuration is present
  • Which cancellation conditions your chart meets, and which it does not
  • What the chart says about the difficulty you came with
  • A written summary, so you are not relying on memory when the family asks

Said plainly

What this cannot do

I can tell you what a configuration is, how common it is, and what thirty years of records do and do not show about it. I cannot prove a negative, and I would be overstating my position if I claimed to. What I will say plainly is that nobody should be frightened into an expensive remedy by a label alone — and that if a practitioner leads with your dosha and a price, you have learned something useful about the practitioner.

Before you ask

Common questions

Is kaal sarp dosh as serious as I have been told?

In my records it does not behave like the fear predicts. It is a description of how the planets happen to be distributed relative to the nodal axis, it is more common than people assume, and its prominence in popular practice is comparatively recent. It is also easy to detect without any interpretive skill, which makes it ideal for selling a remedy at scale.

Someone has quoted me a large sum for a puja. Should I pay it?

Not before the chart has been read properly. If the configuration is the only thing anyone has told you about your chart, you have not had a reading. Expense is not a measure of efficacy.

Can a dosha be removed?

A placement in a birth chart does not go away. What can change is whether it was correctly identified, whether it cancels, and how you handle the period in which it is active. I would be careful of anyone describing a permanent removal.
