Fifteen minutes can move the ascendant, and moving the ascendant moves every house with it. If your time is a family estimate, this is the consultation that should come before the others rather than after them.
In short: We take the window you believe the birth falls in, test candidate times against events in your life that are already dated, and narrow it until one holds up better than the rest — or until I tell you honestly that it cannot be narrowed further.

Marriage, a move, a bereavement, a job change, a serious illness, the birth of a child — events with firm dates are what rectification is built on. The more you can date, the tighter the result.
A time that explains one event and nothing else is not a result. A candidate has to hold across the divisional charts and across several events before I will put weight on it.
Sometimes the honest outcome is a narrower window rather than a single minute. You will be told which parts of a reading that window supports and which parts remain unavailable.
Said plainly
Rectification is inference from evidence, not recovery of a record. It produces a working time that explains your history better than the alternatives — it does not produce proof, and an honest practitioner will not present it as such. Where the events you can date are few or vague, the result is a wider window, and I would rather hand you that than a confident minute I invented.
Before you ask
Six to ten firmly dated ones is a workable base. Fewer than four rarely narrows anything usefully, and I will tell you at the outset rather than after. Events you are sure about are worth more than events you half remember.
It is enough to start, not enough to finish. A four-hour window is a real starting point; whether it can be closed depends entirely on how much of your history can be dated.
Possibly neither, and that is worth knowing. Bring both and the events they were based on. Where two candidate times both explain the record, the correct answer is that the ascendant is not settled, and readings should stay within what the wider window supports.
Only if your time is genuinely doubtful. If you have a certificate, you do not need this at all and I will say so. Where the time is a guess, a rectification first is cheaper than a reading you later have to discard.
