Almost everybody who comes to me about this has already been told they have foreign settlement yoga, usually in a way that made the visa sound like a formality. That is not what the placement says.

In short: The chart is read for its relationship with distance and displacement: the fourth house you would be leaving, the ninth, the twelfth, the involvement of Rahu, and — most practically — which periods support movement and which obstruct it.

What you are leaving, not only where you are going

The fourth house does as much work here as the twelfth. In a good many charts the pull is away from something at home rather than towards a country, and knowing which it is changes the decision.

The houses of distance

The ninth for long journeys and higher study, the twelfth for residence away from home. The twelfth is not a departure gate; it governs distance, expenditure and everything conducted out of sight.

Which years support the attempt

The part with practical value. A chart full of foreign indications inside a period that keeps you in place is describing something you may act on much later than you hoped.

A straight answer when the period is against it

This is not a comfortable conversation and it is not always believed. It is also the only version of this reading worth paying for, given what an attempt costs.

Said plainly

What this cannot do

No chart can obtain a visa, influence an application or make a country admit you. It cannot see a policy change announced next year, and it has no view on whether you will be happy once you arrive — which, from the people I have read for afterwards, is the harder question. Eligibility, cost, language and the job market where you are going all outrank the chart, and anyone guaranteeing an immigration outcome is exploiting people at their most hopeful.

Common questions

My visa was refused. Was the reading wrong?

A chart is not an immigration system. It can describe a period in which movement is supported; it cannot see a consulate’s decision or a rule change. Where a period genuinely does not support the attempt, I say so before you spend more on it.

Should I choose a country from my chart?

I would not. Directional guidance exists in the tradition and I will discuss it if you ask, but where you build a life should rest on work, family, language and cost. A chart is a poor substitute for any of those.

Is there really such a thing as foreign settlement yoga?

There are combinations associated with a life built at a distance from where it began. That very often expresses itself as going abroad. It also expresses itself as moving cities, working nights, or a career conducted with people you never meet. The word has been sanded down until it sounds like a booking confirmation.
